So, you want to make clothes for your dog, but …you don’t know how. Well, I have the easiest pattern to print, and sew your own dog vest jacket! And, the jacket is reversible! The design possibilities are endless, where this is a very versatile pattern to work with. It give you the main body of the vest that will have front leg holes, and an arm hole, and the hook & loop / Velcro closure along their bellies.

This is actually one of my easier patterns to make, I think even easier than the dog belly bands!

print 6 pages for tiled taped together pattern

On my jacket design, the vertical sides will connect with hook & loop closure, sewn on, and the tabs at the top will connect around the shoulder, after the piece is turned inside out, to curve around the top of the neck, and make the front leg holes.

For a pug / large toy breed dog size, 23-25″ wide girth, 29 1/2″ wide around girth when finished
neck 16″ – 20″ circumference
back 13″ from neck to tail on top of back
6 paper pattern sheets to print, tape, and cut out, following guide legend image lines, printed on the patterns

About 2 – 2 1/2 hours prep and sew time, mainly because of sewing the Velcro closure on both panels, and sewing around the paper pattern, and sewing the stitch lines of each pattern together, that all just takes time and patience lol.
When you tape the 6 sheets of pattern pages together, tape them, and cut them out, using the legend photo as a guide, it will look like it has wings lol. I had a Yorkie fur mom ask me to take a Yorkshire terrier t-shirt, to make her t-shirts for her dog. Well, it was small enough to scan on the scan bed, and I noticed on the bottom, the chest and belly area, there was a “+” stitch seam, where the sides of the chest / shoulder were connected vertically, and the belly seam was sewn vertically, and then those top and bottom connections / seams were sewn together horizontally, looking like a “+” or PLUS sign, and serged for a clean seam. I looked at it, and thought, “I wonder if I take this “+” seam connection, and how the shoulders sloped in on an angle, that if I make those parts, and the belly area flip out, it looked like angled out wings, and vertical side wings. So, I applied that technique to the dog jacket’ seams along the belly and chest, using the zig-zag stitch on my machine to “serge” the edges, adjusting the pattern, from a t-shirt design to a jacket design, and found that the store bought jackets had a similar design that I was looking make.

If you want to adjust the pattern, or grade it, as they say in sewing circles in regard to fashion, feel free to do so, because animals, like humans, come in all shapes and sizes. They grow, they shrink, they get sick, they eat emotionally, just like us lol! So you can adjust the paper pattern, perhaps use muslin or inexpensive broadcloth, as a mockup, trial piece, before spending money on expensive fabric. That way, you can adjust the pattern. I had a Yorkshire terrier fur parent, who kept having me adjust the pattern, as her Yorkie’s size changed over the years.

Supplies:

1 yard of fabric, 1/2 yard for each side of the jacket
coordinating thread, for each fabric color and hook & loop (Velcro) color, preferably the larger rolls, especially for sewing the hook & loop onto the jackets
hook & loop, brand name is known as Velcro, 3/4″ wide by 9″ long, so 1/4 yard
Then you just need my 6 printable pattern pages, tape, a large pack of straight pins, plus 100/16 or 110/18 machine weight needles, especially for the Velcro brand hook & loop closure, as you will need a lot o thread, and the heavier needle to straight stitch, then zig-zag stitch 3-4 times around the edge of the hook & loop. You can transfer the pattern onto contact paper, or clear vinyl, to then use later, to make more vest jackets, then just store it for when you’re ready to use it next time.
