How to create a background for your Zoom calls

Zoom is a video-chat app that became popular during the last weeks. Working from home means getting invited to a lot of team calls. This software is perfect for that, as it allows you to see the rest of the people and also share your screen.

The app also has some cool features, like the possibility of changing your background during the video call. You can already find some presets available, but you can also create a new scene yourself. It’s straightforward!

In today’s post, we are going to explain to you how to create a new background to make your calls more fun. Follow the steps and add some color to your home office routine!

Step-by-step

For this tutorial, we are going to use Canva. As we have mentioned in previous posts, one of the biggest perks of this software is that here you can find a template for almost everything! Type “Zoom Virtual Background” in the search bar to get started.

Option A: Video Background

Once you open your new canvas, the app will suggest some resources that you could use for your design. Here you can find some short video clips. To try them, click on them or drop them over the workspace. You can modify the video’s length with the “Trim” tool.

Once you have finished editing your clip, you can download it to your device. Please note that video edits are still a Beta option on Canva, so the result might not be what you expect. Press “Download” to get an MP4 file.

Option B: Image Background

If you prefer to have just an image as a background, there is no problem! Canva allows you to use pre-made illustrations or to create brand new ones. You can play with the different elements until you get a design that you like.

Once your image is ready, press “Download.”

How to upload your background to Zoom

You can join Zoom meetings through the browser version, but there is also a desktop app. To upload your files to the software, you will need to install the app and log in with a username and a password. You can find the app here.

Press the “Settings” icon on the top right corner of your screen. A new window will appear.

Select “Virtual Background” on the left menu.

Press “Add Image.” Browse until you find the image that you want. Upload the image to the software.

For this feature to work correctly, you will need to sit in front of a solid background. Please note that a green wall or curtain will help you get the best results.
