Although I love big, elaborate crochet projects, they are not what I usually have time for. After all, running a business, raising a toddler, and taking care of myself are more than enough to occupy my time. If you’re a mom, or you know one, you know that we mothers tend to put ourselves last. Self-care is often an afterthought when it should really be a priority.

One overlooked aspect of self-care is bathing: I’m not talking about grabbing a quick shower, which I’m sure we all do (or at least I hope so!). I’m talking about taking an honest-to-goodness bath with bubbles or a bath bomb, the lights dimmed, and some soft music playing. I favor showers over baths due to lack of time, but whether I’m showering or bathing, I have two strong preferences: one, I like having music playing, and two, I like using a crocheted washcloth.

Why do I use a crochet washcloth?  First of all, it’s something that I made, and it gives me happiness to use it. Secondly, cotton is a sustainable material, and you can often find recycled cotton yarns, which makes it an even more eco-friendly choice. Finally, I like how it feels. Depending on the crochet stitches you use when you make it, you can add lots of texture to your washcloth, which makes it great for exfoliating your skin. Cotton yarn is also great for making facial scrub rounds and drawstring soap savers – which are awesome alternatives to disposable cotton rounds and synthetic bath puffs. Even if you are not worried about being eco-friendly, this set is still a great addition to your bathroom. It also makes a great gift, especially for a new mom. Add this crochet set to a decorative basket with a scented candle, some bath oils, and a couple of moisturizing face masks, and you have a thoughtful gift for that special person in your life. About This Project

For this project, I used Big Twist cotton yarn. It’s affordable, and it comes in a wide variety of colors. You can find it at your local JoAnn Fabrics, or you can order it online here. You can often find it on sale for under $2, so it’s a great budget-friendly project as well. I would say that these patterns are suitable for a beginner, but any skill level can enjoy them. Remember that cotton tends to shrink, especially if dried on high heat, so be careful with how you wash & dry your set when it’s done. Let’s get started!

Abbreviations:

sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
ch – chain

Crochet Washcloth

Whether in a set or by itself, this is a wonderful addition to your self-care routine.

You’ll need:

  • 5mm hook
  • Big Twist Cotton Yarn in Pastel Blue
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Directions:

  • Ch 36
  • Row 1: Hdc in second ch from the hook and every ch across.
  • Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in the second hdc from the hook and every hdc across, working in BACK LOOPS ONLY. (ch 2 counts as the first hdc in the row)
  • Rows 3-23: repeat row 2.
  • Trim your yarn and weave in the ends.

Facial Rounds

Bye bye, disposable rounds and wipes. There is a better option – and it’s reusable.

You’ll Need:

  • 5mm hook
  • Big Twist Cotton Yarn in Pastel Blue
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Directions:

  • Ch 2. Work 8 dc in the second ch from hook, and sl st into the first dc.
  • Ch 2. Work 2 dc into each dc around and sl st into starting dc
  • Ch 2. Work 2 dc into the first dc, and then 1 dc into the next dc. Repeat this all the way around the circle and sl st into the first dc.
  • Ch 2. Repeat (2 dc, 1 dc) like above, then sl st into first dc. Trim your yarn and weave in your ends.

Soap Saver

This soap saver perfectly fits a bar of my favorite handmade soap (Sugared Honey) by RoseEssentialsStore on Etsy.

You’ll Need…

  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Big Twist Cotton Yarn in Aquamarine Speckle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Directions:

  • Ch 30
  • Row 1: hdc in the second ch from hook and each ch across.
  • Row 2: ch 2. Hdc in the second hdc from the hook and each hdc across, working in BACK LOOPS ONLY (ch 2 counts as the first hdc in this row).
  • Rows 3-11: Repeat row 2
  • Row 12: Ch 2, dc in each hdc across.
  • Trim your yarn, finish off and weave in your ends.
  • Using the yarn needle and matching yarn, fold the soap saver in half and whip stitch the bottom and open side closed, making a pouch.
  • Tie off your yarn, and weave in the ends.
  • Cut a length of yarn – about 10 inches – and weave in-between the row of dc at the top as a drawstring. Tie into a bow, and trim if desired. (Alternatively, if you want something stronger, you can chain a length of yarn to use as the drawstring, but it won’t pull as smoothly through the double crochet stitches as just a regular piece of yarn will)

Customizing Your Set

One of my favorite things about this project – besides it being budget-friendly and eco-friendly – is that there are so many great ways to customize it. There are currently 24 different colors of Big Twist cotton yarn available on JoAnn Fabrics’ website, and any one color, or more, would look great as a washcloth.

You can also change it up by switching your stitches around – hdc in the washcloth can become dc if you’d prefer a less tight texture for your washcloth. Just remember that your washcloth will end up a little bit longer if you do this.

Finally, another one of my favorite things about this project is that you can make it any size you want. Smaller versions of the washcloth pattern would be great for children!
