What’s your name?

Keychains are classic gifts, you have keys to everything, so of course you need a keychain to hold them. So, why not make sure that keychain is cute and totally you. Having multiple adults with different key sets also makes having a distinct keychain helpful as well. If you have a vinyl cutter like a Cricut or Silhouette, this is the perfect craft for you. In just a few steps you can make your own personal keychain in no time.

What you’ll need to get started

So, with any craft you can find most of your supplies on Amazon or Etsy or any local craft store. Also, you can also find keychain kits on Amazon, which it’s also great to buy in bulk because these make great gifts! This list is of course the basic items you will need to start off.

  • Acrylic 2 Inch rounds
  • Split key ring with chain
  • Jump rings
  • Jewelry pliers
  • Color Permanent Vinyl
  • Vinyl cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette, ets..)
  • Svg file for background

Like I said, this is just the basic items, while making this project you may realize you need other items. Get as creative as you want.

Let’s make a name!

So, now that you have your supplies you can get started on creating the vinyl design for your name. For this example, we are using the Cricut Design Space to set up our name, and the Cricut Joy to cut out the design. For the pattern, we’ll be using the keychain bundle set found on Creative Fabrica, the chevron pattern in a purple color. What’s really nice is you can buy vinyl variety packs with transfer vinyl as well which makes it really easy to use. For the name, we will be using Dance Monkey which you can find on any site.

You can use any type of background design as well as font, it’s up to you how simple or complex you want it. It’s also fun to see what colors you can mix and match for the background.

So once you’ve chosen all your designs it’s now time to cut and place.

How do you assemble?

So as we’ve said once you have your designs it’s now time to cut and assemble. Make sure your designs fit your 2 inch acrylic round. So the design chosen here is adjusted to 1.9 inches just making it slightly smaller than the acrylic. Once you have that cut, move on to the name you will be putting on the keychain. Make sure the name stays within the background design so that it will fit in the acrylic round. Something to note, sometimes cutting letters on the Cricut can be  a bit difficult since the smaller complex letters tend to cut wrong. You might have to run multiple cuts with different settings to get it right. Don’t be discouraged if it takes you a couple of times.

Once they are all cut out and ready, you will use your transfer tape to place your designs on your Acrylic. To give it a little more depth you can add your background design on one side and your name to the other if you’re feeling a little fancy. If not, you can just add the name on top of the background and it will blend in well.

Once the vinyl is in place it’s pretty much secure. If you’re worried about it not sticking well, you can always take a heat gun to it. Run the heat over the vinyl back and forth evenly for a few seconds. While you do this you’ll notice the vinyl tightening up and securing itself more to the acrylic round. That way you have that added security, knowing it should stick even better from there.

So, you have your design placed and now all you need to do is add your key chain to your acrylic round. You will need a jewelry plier to open the ring that connects the keychain. Once you have that open all you have to do is connect it to the acrylic and key chain. Once closed you’re pretty much finished.

What’s that Name?

So, that’s pretty much it – you’ve made your name keychain. Some other ways you can make them are with an initial instead of the background with the name and also using different colors to layer on. Glitter vinyl adds some shine and you can always use resin to add a glitter background as well. These make great gifts for friends and family as well as add to anyone’s Etsy shop. Simple and fun, these are a hit with everyone. You can get really creative with these as well by decorating with tassels or any other charms or embellishments. Have fun with it.
