How to design a personalized graduation cap

How to design a personalized graduation cap main article image

Graduation is a very special moment in your life, and why not make it even more special by designing your own personalized graduation cap!

Creative Fabrica asked crafter Tiffany from Creative Expressions by Tiffany how she created this stunning Graduation Cap design. Here is what she said:

Step-by-step: Graduation Cap Design

Supplies used/needed:

  • Graduation cap
  • Acrylic paint
  • Spray on acrylic paint sealer
  • Paint brushes
  • Silhouette cutting machine
  • Htv vinyl or 651 vinyl (I used 651, gold colored vinyl)
  • Hair dryer
  • I used the Magic font for this design (The blue graduation cap in the image above, get the Magic font here).

I started this project because someone sent me a picture from Pinterest of how they would like their graduation hat designed. The original design was a handwritten font and painted floral design. I used acrylic paint and I hand painted my own floral border of the hat to look similar to the one in the picture.

Once I was finished painting, I used a spray on acrylic sealer and sprayed over the painted image to seal it to the hat.

Then I used my Silhouette machine to design the wording for the hat with a font called Magic. I cut the wording out on 651 vinyl and used transfer paper and transferred it to the graduation hat.

After it was in place, I used a hair dryer for heat and heated over the vinyl wording. Then I pressed the wording down on the hat with my fingers and that helped the vinyl to adhere to the hat. You can also use heat transfer vinyl (htv) and heat press or iron to apply to the hat, but you have to be careful with the graduation cap being so delicate so that you don’t apply too much heat and ruin the hat.

Happy Crafting!
