I have spent my entire life telling people that I am not artistic. Why? I thought people were born with artistic abilities—a gift from the powers that be. I can’t even draw a respectable stick figure.
I remember wanting to enroll in Junior High art class, but I sincerely believed those students already knew how to draw, paint, and most importantly, where to place shadows and highlights. I assumed they picked up a pen, pencil, or paintbrush, and magic happened without practice. I was so wrong.
I received an iPad Pro as a gift late last year and immediately downloaded Procreate. There was a definite learning curve, but I have created some interesting pieces. Some pieces I only love, while others I have received compliments on. It has been 104 days since I first opened Procreate, and I can most definitely see an improvement. The work certainly isn’t perfect, but I am enjoying the process.
My point is this. We are, at times, our own worst enemy. Create and have fun doing it! I am even getting better at shadow and highlight placement.
