Wood is a versatile material that can add a warmth and richness to your holiday decorating.  It looks lovely on its own but can also be painted and embellished to add a personal touch and fit a unique theme.  Here are five examples of unique Christmas décor that can be created in wood to add a welcoming touch to your home. German Christmas Pyramid

If you’ve never heard of this amazing holiday decoration, you’re in for a treat. A Christmas pyramid, or Weihnachtspyramide in German, is a candle holder with a central carousel. The heat from the candles, which are positioned on the outside of the central pyramid figure, rises, and causes the fan blades to spin. The carousel usually depicts holiday scenes and figures but can also show other motifs.

While designing your own Christmas pyramid will allow you to customize the scenes, colors, or motifs to match your holiday theme, the growing international popularity of these unique objects has increased the market for them, making it easier to purchase a file or finished product to fit your home.

Whether you choose to make a simple design, or opt for a multi-layered complex structure, the warm glow of the candles and the gently spinning windmill top will bring comfort and joy to your holiday décor.  Don’t forget to never leave candles unattended while lit.

Advent Calendars

Advent calendars are a fun way of counting down the days until Christmas and are usually stocked with a hidden treat behind each marked day.  Before starting your countdown, why not substitute the single-use paper calendars with an eye-catching wooden one?  There are so many types of advent calendars available and laser cutting files to create your own.  You can even add your own personal touches to it.  With some effort, your Advent calendar can be a main focal piece in your indoor Christmas decorations.

Creating one out of wood can be an entire family activity.  After designing and cutting, bring the entire family together to decorate and assemble.  For years to come, looking at the calendar you created together will bring back the memories of time spent with one another.  Some possible calendar ideas include:

  1. Christmas Village: Make houses and shops with spaces to hide treats.
  2. Your town: Recreate your hometown businesses and home, making the calendar a showcase of that moment in history.
  3. Large Christmas tree: Make a wooden tree with cubbies and little drawers to hide treats.
  4. Santa’s Workshop: Create your own version of his workshop and put treats in mini presents
  5. Advent Ferris Wheel: Want something that can be displayed year-round?  Try this eye-catching creation for a cross-season decoration.

Shelf Sitters

While shelf sitters may seem like a common decoration, wooden shelf sitters can still be a unique holiday item that really rings in the Christmas spirit.

Sets of 3D wooden ornaments in farmhouse-style or rattan have been very popular this season.  Wood is a very easy to customize material; paint and add embellishments as desired to create a custom look for your home.

Centerpieces and Tableware

Decorating your holiday table might take a back seat to getting presents together or brightening up your home with holiday cheer.  However, with a little bit of planning, you can add these wonderful wooden creations to your list of table-decorating favorites.

Items to remember when planning your Christmas table decorations would be:

  • Placemats
  • Napkin Rings (for individual place settings)
  • Napkin holder (if doing buffet-style dining)
  • Coasters
  • Wine glass or cup markers
  • Centerpiece displays
  • Trivets

Placemats made of wood are not common but could be a fun way to include a guest’s name, a game for children, or even just a way to elevate certain dishes above the rest.

Walnut napkin rings scored with "Merry Christmas" in multiple languages-a game for guests to guess which language is on the ring.

Napkin rings can also serve the purpose of marking a guest’s place at the table.  Other options, besides matching your table setting theme, would be to include riddles or conversation prompts to keep guests interacting with one another.

Custom napkin holders (shown in walnut and maple) can add interesting character to your buffet table.

For buffet-style dining, adorning your table with a unique wooden napkin holder will be another point of interest on your table that guests can enjoy.  Wood can also make useful coasters or trivets to protect your tabletops from water or heat damage.

A wine glass or cup marker made of wood will help alleviate any confusion on whose cup belongs to whom.  They can also double as a take-home trinket marking the occasion.

Creating a unique wooden holder for floral arrangements is another way to liven up your holiday table.  These centerpieces can be personalized with holiday sayings or a monogram.  They can also make great gifts for lucky recipients to bring home or double as gift baskets for guests.

Tree Ornaments

Last, but not least, wood makes a warm and wonderful material for ornaments.  The possibilities are endless.  Whether you are creating personalized name ornaments for family members, or 3D snowflakes for your tree, wood makes an excellent material choice.

Some people enjoy themed-Christmas trees and wooden ornaments can be personalized to match the theme.  When thinking of ideas for your personalized ornaments, consider adding details that include major events of the year, or memorial ornaments to honor the ones we’ve lost.  And don’t forget to make custom ornaments for your furry friends!

Using a sturdier wood like maple plywood or Baltic birch will allow you to build lasting ornaments in a light enough color to customize with paint or engraves.  Walnut’s rich color doesn’t show engraves well but is a good material for cut-out ornaments.  Cedar is a fragrant but fragile wood that would pair well with a solid material like clear acrylic (which is also eye-catching when engraved and lit with Christmas lights).

Wood Christmas décor is endless in both variety and ways to personalize to your tastes.  Consider adding some unique wooden decorations to your home this season.
