Sewing is a fantastic hobby: it allows you to create new pieces of clothing from scratch, and to upcycle old garments. If you are about to start your sewing journey, you should start by buying a sewing machine.

The machine is the main supply that you need, but it’s not the only one. If you wonder what else do you need, keep reading.¬†This post is a checklist with all the essential supplies that you must include in your first sewing box. We hope you find it useful!

Fabric scissors

You will need a pair of scissors to cut the fabric and adjust it to the size and shape of the patterns. But not all scissors will be useful for this purpose. Traditional scissors, like the ones you would use to cut paper or cardboard, can not cut cloth properly.  Make sure you get yourself a good pair of fabric scissors. Keep them sharp and clean, and avoid using them for other tasks. This way, you can use them to cut fabric without unnecessarily damaging it.

Hand sewing needles

Every sewing machine incorporates special needles, but those are not the only ones that you need. Even if you always use your sewing machine in your projects, you need to have some hand sewing needles. You will need them for basic tasks, like sewing buttons, and they are always a helpful resource. Sometimes, it’s faster to tackle some sewing issues by hand. Our advice is to buy different sizes, so you have the perfect fit for every occasion. If you need some tips to thread your needles, check this post.

Thread

Thread is a primary sewing supply. Your machine needs it to join all the pieces of every new garment. In every sewing box, there should be at least two thread rolls: a black and a white one. Our advice is to build a small “library” with different colors. That way, you can combine the color with the fabric of your choice. By combining both materials, you’ll give your creations a seamless aspect.

Pins

Pins are similar to needles, but they have a different role. These small sharp tools will help you join all the pieces of cloth together before you definitely sew them. This way, you’ll be able to try on your new clothes before they even exist, and realize if you need to make any changes. Please, remember to handle them with care! Sewing pins are sharp, and they can hurt you or your models if you use them carelessly.

Pin cushion

As we said, pins are quite sharp, and they can be dangerous. Our storage advice is to punch them in a pin cushion. It’s simple but effective. You can find pillows in a lot of fabrics and shapes. If you are feeling inspired, you can also create them yourself. This primary measure will keep your fingers safe every time you put your hand inside your sewing box.

Thimble

This little tool has a significant impact in terms of safety. A thimble is a hard object that covers the tip of your finger. By using it, you can prevent hurting yourself with the sharp ends of your pins and needles. A thimble does not directly help your workflow, but it makes it more safe and smooth. Even if you are extremely careful, there is always some risk when you use some objects. Better safe than sorry!

Measuring tape

To set the dimensions of your new garments, you always need to have the reference of a model or a pattern. Sometimes you’ll have another person to help you. If that’s not the case, you’ll need to use a mannequin. In any case, a measuring tape will become your best friend. Unlike most measuring tools, human bodies are not entirely flat. A flexible tool is vital to calculate the right measurement.

Tailor’s chalk

To cut fabric, you will need to make some marks. To avoid ruining the material, you must pick an article that you can remove later. For this reason, tailor’s chalk is the sewer’s best friend. It’s simple to use and to erase. Make sure you include at least a small piece in your sewing box!

Fabric marker

You should get a water-soluble fabric marker. These pens are a great alternative to tailor’s chalk. You can paint your fabric with them and then easily remove the marks with some water. You won’t be able to tell that you used them! If you are allergic to chalk, this is the perfect choice for you.

Seam ripper

No matter if you are an experienced sewer or just a rookie. You’ll make mistakes sometimes, and that is fine! Removing stitches is not fun, but sometimes it’s necessary. You can make this process more agile with a seam ripper. This tool has been created to help you remove the wicked stitches. You should include one in your sewing box: it will make your life easier!

We hope you’ve found our advice inspiring. Good luck with selecting materials for your sewing box!
