Let’s Eat Cake

One file and so many different options!  Thanks to the Cutting Room Designs team for creating this SVG box file for us.  Fancy, not so fancy or just plain.  Closed, open, decorated or not.  Patterned paper or plain.  The choices are many.  How would you choose to create your own version using the box as your base?

Watermelon Cake Slice Box

Yellow Burlap Lace Backgrounds

You’ll also need:

Electronic die cutting machine and associated software (Skycut C24 and SCAL5 Pro)
Cardstock (recommend at least 80lb weight)
Transparency (optional)
Small lace doily
Wax Seal (your choice of design)
Bearly Art Precision Glue
Glue dots
Wooden spoon
Small doily (crocheted or tatted)
1/8” wide double stick tape

Purchase, download and unzip the files.  You’ll be using the watermelon cake main pieces for the lid and bottom.  Remove the smaller decorative pieces (rind, seeds).  For the lid you will need the two side pieces, the back and 2 top pieces for the lid.  For the bottom, you’ll need the two side pieces, the back and 2 bottoms.

TIP:  If your cake/brownie or cookie is particularly greasy or heavy, you will want to line the box bottom with some wax paper.

Our first box is a closed box, we reduced the size of the box pieces (ALL) by 25%. Remember in SCAL 5 you can reduce across the pages you have in your project once the pieces have been placed on the mat.

Once the resizing was completed, we used the color palette in SCAL 5 Pro to load and add an image to print to each of the file pieces.  The Skycut has spot-on print 2 cut, and there is no waste of ink when you use this option. Add an image from the Yellow Burlap & Lace collection.  Once that has been completed for both the top and bottom pieces, print then cut according to your machine’s directions.  Assemble the base of the box, following the directions in the pdf included with your purchase of the file.  These are very easy to assemble and don’t take much time at all.  Repeat the process for the box top.  If desired some inking could be added along the edges, but it isn’t necessary for this look.

Once assembled, decorate as desired.  Keeping with the soft pastel look, we added a bow of white organza ribbon, and a wax seal was popped on top of the bow.   Adding a tag with the recipient’s name Makes it a perfect takeaway from the party.

Our second box is made from kraft-colored stock.  It’s perfect for a little less formal occasion, serve yourself a gift box or it could be dressed up a bit.  We’ve used just the box bottom SVG pieces for this one.  Assemble as shown in the pdf provided in the file folder.  Add a simple large cupcake liner to the box. Let your guests fill their box with a wedge of cake, brownie, fudge, or a sugar cookie.  Have a piece of wax paper cut and ready to top the dessert – then, wrap the exterior of the box with some twine, and slip in a wooden craft spoon.  This is a perfect takeaway from your event.

For our third box, the SVG box pieces are again placed on the mat and sized as above, the pieces are not filled with an image.  Again, we chose not to use the rind or seed pieces for this version.  The box lid does have an alteration and we’ve added an inset shadow cut to create a window.  If you’re planning to use the previous mats for this project, you’ll want to create a copy of the box top.  The inset shadow is created by using the Effects Tab > Shadow Layer > Inset Shadow > .350 inches.  There is enough room for the tabs of the side and back pieces to still be hidden.  Cut two of these pieces

The transparent acetate is cut the same size as the top piece without the inset shadow.  You do not need a solid cut of the box lid for this version.

Assemble the box bottom as you would normally and set it aside.

The box top is assembled nearly the same as the original file, but you’ll add the acetate to one of the new box lid pieces.  Add the other box lid piece.  Glue the inside lid piece first.  The piece with the acetate will be added last to the outside of the box.  This becomes the box top and your box is now ready for decorating.

Embellish as desired – we used a small tatted doily from our lace stash, some twine and a wooden heart to finish this box.

We’ve shown you just three ways to use this file.  However, there are so many options for this simple box.  Make yours.  Cut as originally designed for a fun watermelon box.  Don’t forget the other options shared in the description of this box:

The watermelon slice box is a nice sized triangle shape that could easily be converted to a slice of cake, pizza, or pie.”

The original file size is perfect for a slice of pizza, fruit tart, pie or piece of a cake round.  And could hold a gift card.  These boxes could also be used for any holiday – I’m thinking these would be fun with a Halloween or Christmas theme.  Are the wheels turning?

As noted earlier, ours have been resized to hold a brownie or decorated cookie for an upcoming 90th birthday celebration later this month.  Looking forward to sharing these boxed goodies with friends and neighbors.

Make an even smaller version to hold mini cookies, nuts or mints or homemade candy.

If you decide to create this box, what will you do with it?  We’d love to see your results!  Be sure to share and tag us with your posts on Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest @creativefabrica or #nurtureyrheart
