Farmhouse signs are very popular to use in home décor. This project shows you another way to make a sign that adds a rustic look to your décor. It is easy to make and does not take very much time to complete.  This simple to make sign will add charm to your home or would make a wonderful housewarming gift for a friend.

Supplies Needed:

  • Medium basswood country round (or any size)
  • Black acrylic paint and paintbrush
  • White permanent vinyl (brand of your choice)
  • Cutting Machine (Cricut Explore Air 2 was used here)
  • Cutting mat for vinyl
  • SVG file of your choice
  • Weeding Tool
  • Transfer paper
  • Scraper tool (optional)
  • Polyurethane Varnish (gloss or matte finish–optional)
  • Sawtooth hanger

Sourcing basswood

Basswood country rounds (or wood slices) can be found in most craft stores or on Amazon. You can also check out the website to purchase rounds directly from this company. If you have an appropriate tree in your yard, you could get creative and cut your own wood slice. Basswood rounds come in a variety of sizes. This project uses a medium slice.  The file used was sized appropriately for this size of round .

Using the black acrylic paint, paint the inside of the wood leaving a small border. Sometimes you can follow the rings on the wood as an outline or just freehand as you go. Don’t worry about your lines being perfect. Remember this is rustic. Once the first coat of paint has dried, add a second coat. Let paint dry completely before applying your vinyl.

You can design your own quote to use on your sign or purchase something a premade design premade. Etsy is a good source for many of these types of designs. Creative Fabrica offers high quality designs both available for purchase and for free. The quote used here was purchased from MyGraceLynnDesigns, but there are a lot of similar quotes on Creative Fabrica.

Measure wood slice to determine size of design

Using Design Space on the Cricut website (or whatever design program you use with your machine) select your design. If you are uploading a design from a download, open a new canvas and click upload to find your design. Browse your downloads folder and open the appropriate downloaded file.  Insert the image onto your canvas. Measure your wood slice to determine the size you will need to make.  Adjust your image by clicking on the bottom right corner and dragging the box to the size that will work for these measurements. Remember to allow space around your design. If you want to add additional images like hearts or stars, etc. you can add them here also. The house with the heart that was used in this project was found in “images” in Cricut Design Space. Since this was also cut from the white vinyl, you would need to select all images and align horizontally. Once it is aligned “select all” to have all pieces cut out together.  Save your design before proceeding.

Cut the design on your cutting machine

Once you are happy with your design, continue to “make it” to cut out the design. Use the green Cricut mat to cut your vinyl and make sure it is adhered well to your mat. Cut your vinyl using the “premium outdoor vinyl” setting and more pressure.  This seemed to work best for this particular vinyl. If you have cut vinyl before you probably know what works best with your machine. If not, you may want to do a “test” cut to find out which settings will work.

When the cutting is complete, remove mat from machine and place face down and pull the mat away from the vinyl. Carefully weed the background pieces from the design. Take it slow to make sure you do not weed something you need. One tip you might find helpful is to use a small pair of scissors to cut the pieces of vinyl that have been partially removed so that it doesn’t reattach to the remaining pieces. This can be so frustrating.

Once the background has been removed, cut a piece of transfer tape to fit over your design. Carefully place the tape on your design and rub in place. Pull back the transfer tape and make sure the vinyl has attached. If not, replace tape and use more pressure to adhere. Sometimes using the scraper tool will help.

Apply vinyl to painted surface

Line up your design on your painted surface. Once you are satisfied with the placement. Press down and rub to adhere. Once again, the scraper tool can help with this step. Remove transfer tape being careful to make sure all pieces are sticking to the surface. Save your transfer tape for your next project by replacing it on the backing paper. On some of the projects shown here extra heart designs were added in a different color of vinyl.  Use the same steps as outlined to apply additional pieces. These were designed and cut out separately on a different canvas but you could place them on the same canvas as your design and select different colors on the mat. The machine will prompt you when you need to insert a different color.

This next step is optional but you can varnish the surface of your piece as an extra protection to make sure your vinyl stays in place. A gloss polyurethane varnish was used here but you could use whatever you have available. Apply one or two coats of varnish and let dry completely.

Attach hanger

Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back of your piece for hanging, centering and keeping straight so that your sign will hang horizontally on the wall.  A hanger that was hammered in place was used for this project.  If you have ever used the hangers that require little screws or nails you surely know how difficult those can be.

You could add a bow or flowers to your farmhouse sign as you desire.  It is recommended that you attach your hanger to the back before placing any three-dimensional pieces on the front.  Otherwise, it could be difficult to add the hanger to the back.

These signs do not need to be painted black. Other colors can be used. Be sure to select a vinyl color that will show on your background

Your sign is ready to hang and enjoy. Sometimes the smallest place needs something a little extra and this could be just the perfect piece.
