How to access the layers of an SVG file in CanvasWorkspace

Vectorial designs are usually compound by layers. Every layer represents an element of the final composition.

To manage the layers of your design, you need to open the Layers Panel. To do this, hit the third icon on the right menu.

Look at the layers panel. Besides every layer, you’ll see some icons.

The first icon is a small knife. By default, CanvasWorkspace will prepare the layers of your SVG to be cut. If you’d like to draw some of them, you can change it here. Click on the small knife and change it for the pen icon. Your ScanNCut will draw all the layers with the pen sign.

The second icon allows you to toggle the visibility of your layers. If you check the box, you’ll hide the current layer. Bear in mind that hidden layers are still part of the composition – even though you can not see them in your canvas.

As you can see, the right ear does not appear on the canvas anymore.

The third icon is a checkbox that you can use to block a layer. When a layer is blocked, the changes that you make to your design won’t apply to it. Look at the image below to see how to lock a layer.

Select “Export FCM File” if you want to save your design as an FCM file on your computer.

Select “Transfer FCM File via the Internet” if you want to transfer the file to another device via the Internet.

Select “Transfer FCM File to ScanNCut DX via USB Cable”if you want to transfer the cut file to your machine via USB cable.

And that’s it! You’ve created an FCM file that you can cut with your ScanNCut machine.

Why do I have to convert my SVG files to FCM?

SVG files contain Scalable Vector Graphics. This file format allows you to record a lot of information about your designs. The images are made of vectors instead of pixels so that you can change their size as much as you want. Your designs will always have good quality.

SVG files are popular among cutting machine users. With CanvasWorkspace, you can see all the layers and cut lines of your SVG design.

While CanvasWorkspace can read your SVG files, your ScanNCut machine can’t. If you want your machine to process your design, you need to export it as an FCM file. FCM is the native file format for ScanNCut machines. These files contain all the information that the machine needs to cut your design.

Bear in mind that FCM files are not edition files. To make changes to your design, you need to have an SVG or a CWPRJ version. CWPRJ is the native format for CanvasWorkspace projects. To learn more about the types of files that you can use in CanvasWorkspace, check this article.
