Creating a text box in Silhouette Studio is straightforward! You just need to press on the “A” icon that you’ll find on the left toolbar. Then, the cursor will change its shape, and you’ll be able to draw a text box. Place your text box where you want it to be and start writing.

As you can see in the image, the text will have a default appearance. Don’t worry about that; we’ll show you the way to change that later.

Your text box operates just as a shape. What does this mean? It means that you can change its width, height, or position the same way you would do with a rectangle or a circle that you have created with the Shape tool. Take into account that changing the size of the text box won’t affect the size of the text. It will just increase the amount of space where you can write.

To manually rotate your text box, select it by clicking with the mouse. A small green circle will appear on top of it. Select the green circle with the mouse and use it to try different placements.

The default aspect of the text on Silhouette Studio differentiates the outline of every character from the filling color. This means that you can edit both of them separately. To modify these parameters, you must select the text by hovering with the mouse above it.

To change the filling color of the characters, press the first icon in the upper toolbar (the purple rectangle on the image above).

To change the outline color of the characters, press the second icon (the yellow square with no filling). To change the outline width, you can use the third icon (the straight line) or modify the number of pixels in the box beside it.

On the right toolbar, you will find an “A” icon. Click it to open the Text Style tool. This tool will allow you to change some aspects of your text.

The first parameters that you can edit are the font and the text size. Changing the font is easy. Once you have opened the tool, you will see a list with all the fonts that you have on your computer. You can scroll up and down to find the one that you want to use.

Please note that to find your favorite fonts here, you have to install them on your computer before. If you don’t know how to do this, you can check our articles about Installing fonts on Mac and Installing fonts on Windows.

You can change the font size by typing on the box on the right. If you click on the downward arrow, you’ll find a list of default sizes that you can choose.

Under the fonts menu, you will find some edition buttons. If you are familiar with software like Microsoft Word or tools like Canva, you’ll quickly recognize the meaning of every icon. Let’s take a look at them.

The B icon stands for “Bold.” Select the text and click this icon to turn your characters into their bold version.

The icon stands for “Italic.” Select the text and click this icon to turn your characters into their cursive version.

The U icon stands for “Underline.” Select the text and click this icon to underline the words.

After the Bold, Italic, and Underline icons, you’ll find the text justification options. You can choose between Justify Left, Justify Center, Justify Right, and Justify Full. They work the same way as in every text processing software. Please, remember that these icons allow you to justify the text inside the text box. You can’t align the text on your design from here.

How to adjust line spacing in Silhouette Studio

If you want to adjust the space between the lines of your text, look at the end of the Text Style menu. Here you’ll find a parameter called “Line Spacing.” There are three ways you can change it.

If you want to do it manually, you can move the arrow on the left box. If you move the pointer to the left, the line spacing will decrease. If you move the arrow to the right, the line spacing will increase.

If you prefer to set this parameter at a specific value, you can delete the number that appears on the box and write the new value yourself.

Besides the number box, you’ll find two small arrows and a percentage. Every time you click the ascending arrow, line spacing will increase by 5%. Every time you press the descending arrow, the space between the lines will decrease by 5%.

The mechanism to edit character spacing is just the same as the one we’ve explained for line spacing. Let’s recap:

To adjust this parameter manually, move the arrow that you’ll find in the horizontal box. If you move it to the right, the value will increase. If you move to the left, it will decrease.

If you want to set this parameter at a specific amount, you can write it directly in the number box.

Besides the number box, you’ll find two small arrows and a percentage. Every time you click the ascending arrow, character spacing will increase by 5%. Every time you press the descending arrow, the space between the characters will decrease by 5%.

How to change the orientation of a text in Silhouette Studio

By default, every time you create a text box, your words will be oriented horizontally. If, for some reason, your design requires your text to be in vertical, you can easily change it. Besides the “Justify Full” icon, you’ll find two options: Horizontal and Vertical.

The first icon shows the same symbol as the “Text Style” toolbar. You’ll see that this option is activated by default. Select this option if you want your text to have a horizontal orientation.

The second icon shows the toolbar symbol oriented vertically. Select the text and press this button if you want your text to have a vertical direction.

How to Ungroup the characters of a text  in Silhouette Studio

As we said at the beginning of this guide, Silhouette Studio treats every text box as a shape. If you want your characters to behave as shapes, you need to ungroup your text. This way, you’ll be able to edit every letter as a single shape. Ungrouping your text is straightforward:

  1. Select the text you want to ungroup hovering with the mouse.
  2. Click the right button of your mouse. A task menu will appear.
  3. Press “Ungroup.”

Done! Now, every character is an independent shape.

Once you have ungrouped your text, every character becomes an independent shape. In Silhouette Studio, shapes are made of lines that join each other through anchor points. By modifying those anchor points, you can change the aspect of the shape. The process is straightforward:

  1. Select the character you want to modify.
  2. Click the right button of your mouse. A task menu will appear.
  3. Press “Edit points.”
  4. A new menu will appear on the right side of your screen. It’s the “Point editing” menu. Here you’ll find several options to choose. Experiment with them and see the changes that your shape experiments.
